The Salt Lake Valley has always been famous for the Mormon pioneers that founded the area in 1847 and for being the world headquarters of the LDS Church. More recently it has become famous for being home to some of the world’s best skiing after hosting the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Salt Lake Valley is home to many great processional sport teams such as the Utah Jazz (NBA), the Utah Blaze (Arena Football), Real Salt Lake (MLS), and the Grizzles (ECHL).
On the North-West it is boarding the Great Salt Lake, from which its name derives. On either side of the county are two mountain ranges; The Wasatch Mountains on the East and the Oquirrh Mountains to the West.
The Wasatch Mountains are the most dominating physical feature in Salt Lake County, which are home to four world class ski resorts in Salt Lake County; Snowbird, and Alta which are located in Little Cottonwood Canyon and Solitude and Brighton which are located in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Hiking and camping are very popular canyon activities as well.
